Can you eat pudding and live longer? Well, that is the claim made by Bryan Johnson, a successful U.S. technology entrepreneur more widely known for following a strict diet and lifestyle regime in pursuit of longevity with his anti-ageing protocol called Project Blueprint. We wanted to find out more about the science of the ingredients and how they might contribute to overall health improvements, reducing biological age, and increasing longevity.

In this blog, Dr Tim Pearce headed to the kitchen with cellular ageing scientist and Founder of Nuchido, Dr Nichola Conlon to attempt to make Bryan Johnson’s Nutty Pudding while discussing the health benefits of each ingredient, and their effects on longevity. Will they like it once they have put the recipe to the test?

If you want to get the recipe and create it yourself, watch Bryan Johnson’s original video for the Nutty Pudding. Share your results on social media and tag Dr Tim and Dr Nichola.

What are the beneficial ingredients in the Nutty Pudding?

The full recipe and method for Nutty Pudding is also illustrated below, but first, we want to break down the health benefits of each ingredient and have expert Dr Nichola on hand to explain each one. She explained that the important part about why we have all these ingredients, and the concept behind this pudding, developed by Bryan Johnson, is that every single component or calorie is there for a reason because it has a beneficial compound or a beneficial active ingredient that is going to contribute towards longevity.

  • Cinnamon
Cinnamon is very good at helping to regulate blood sugar levels. As we get older, people start to have problems regulating their blood sugar and insulin which can cause various metabolic problems.
  • Chia Seeds
Chia seeds have two benefits, they have high levels of Omega-3 essential fatty acids which are good for anti-inflammatory purposes, and they are a good source of fibre which is great for the gut microbiome that can become dysregulated with age.
  • Flax Seeds
Flax seeds are also a good source of Omega-3 and fibre.
  • Pea Protein
Pea protein (80 grams of protein per 100 grams, in the product we purchased) is a great protein source; despite being plant-derived, it is still protein. Protein is beneficial for us, especially when we should be increasing protein levels as we get older to make sure that we have enough lean body mass. This is positively associated with longevity.
  • Dark chocolate
Dark chocolate is much better for you because it has a much higher percentage of cocoa which contains cacao – the raw ingredient from which the cocoa is derived. It has high levels of antioxidants which provide a significant benefit to the whole body in removing damaged cells, preventing damage, and reducing inflammation.
  • Walnuts and Macadamia Nuts
Nuts like walnuts and macadamia are a good source of the beneficial Omega-3 fats which are good for brain health, for reducing inflammation, and balancing the correct fat levels.
  • Brazil Nuts
The Nutty Pudding recipe only requires half a Brazil nut due to the potency of its beneficial impact. The magic ingredient in Brazil nuts is selenium which is known to be a potent antioxidant. It also protects our DNA from damage and helps to repair DNA damage which is the leading cause of ageing.
  • Berries (e.g. strawberries, raspberries, blackberries or blueberries)
Fruit, especially berries contain high levels of flavonoids and polyphenols. These very potent compounds are inside fruits that tend to have a very vibrant colour. Many studies show that polyphenols and flavonoids are incredibly beneficial, having an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect on the body. Dr Nichola commented that sometimes they can be just as powerful as drugs, if not more powerful. Food is medicine; it contains important molecules that have a powerful biological effect on the body.
  • Pomegranate
Pomegranate juice is an interesting ingredient for longevity because it contains a precursor for urolithin A. This is a compound that helps to remove damaged mitochondria. The mitochondria are the energy powerhouses of our cells, they can become dysfunctional as we get older meaning the process that recycles and removes worn-out mitochondria slows down leading to a build-up of decomposing matter in the cells which leads to ageing. Urolithin A helps to clean up the cells – kick-starting the natural removal process of mitophagy – leaving only healthy functioning mitochondria in your cells.Check out this interesting news piece on how gut bacteria unleash the anti-ageing power of pomegranates and urolithin A to relaunch mitophagy.Read our additional blog that explains mitochondrial dysfunction.
  • Nut milk
Finally, the recipe requires a mixing agent; we already have nuts, but we also add hazelnut milk to blend.
Dr Nichola pointed out that when shopping for nut milk, you must ensure that they do not contain artificial stabilisers and other ingredients alongside water and nuts, like all sorts of seed oils, e.g., sunflower oil, explaining that some nut milk marketed

What is the verdict on the Nutty Pudding?

It is the moment of truth, time to blend up all the ingredients and see how it turns out!

It is quite thick, more pudding than a smoothie, and the resounding opinion from Dr Tim and Dr Nichola was that it was ‘definitely edible’.
